Summer Camp Teacher

Qualification/Duties: Camp Teacher: The education department is looking for teachers (science/education majors) for our summer camp. Our half-day camp is from 8:30 am to 12:30 am and the teachers are here from 8 am to 1 pm. Our full day camp is from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm and the teachers would be here from 8 am to 4 pm. The camp is Monday through Friday and the week repeat itself the next Monday with a new group of campers. There are approximately 12 campers in each class. We educate the students about nature, habitats, and the animals in them. The grades are 4K years old to 8th grade. We need teachers for June, July, and August. We have several weeks of needs. We provide the content material and supplies. These positions will teach about conservation education, animals, and nature in a fun and exciting way. We have teacher orientation on May 9th or 16th, 2008 starting at 9 pm to about 3 pm.

Aftercare Teacher

The education department is looking for teachers (science/education majors) for our summer camp aftercare. The camp aftercare is from 3:30 pm to 6 pm. The camp aftercare is Monday through Friday and the content is provided. The camp aftercare content will repeat itself the next Monday with a new group of aftercare campers. The grades are 4K years old to 8th grade. We need teachers for June, July, and August. We have several weeks of needs. We provide the content material and supplies. These positions will teach about conservation education, animals, and nature in a fun and exciting way.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • College student or degree in related field with certification
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Teaching experience preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • The ability to work outdoors

Hours/Days: Monday through Friday 8 am to 1 pm, 8 am to 4 pm, or 8 am to 6 pm. June and/or July and/or August.

Early Childhood Part-Time Teacher

Qualification/Duties: This position is responsible for developing educational programming, conducting classes, lesson plans, educational events, and educational activities. Most of the children range in age of 6 months to 5K. There are home school classes for children beginning in 1st grade. During our camp season, the ages range from 4 years of age to 6th grade for this position. The days for this position are generally from Tuesday to Friday for 20 to 25 hours each week. During the school year we have school break camps and they generally run from 8 am to 5 pm. Dates and times to be announced. Summer camp generally runs Monday through Friday 8 am to 1 pm. Assist with special events as needed.

This position will teach about conservation education, animals, and nature in a fun and exciting way. There are opportunities to assist with other educational programs.
Early childhood teachers plan and conduct education programs for young children.

An early childhood teacher may perform the following tasks:
-plan activities using a variety of materials and equipment to develop good coordination, social skills, creativity, self-expression and an interest in learning
-promote language development and self-confidence through storytelling, drama, music and discussions
-help to organize and participate in excursions around the zoo to enhance learning experiences
-encourage children to question and explore the world in which they live
-promote health and safety concepts and social interaction with other children
-promote an awareness and appreciation of the multicultural society in which we live
-comfort children who are hurt or distressed
-discuss with parents and other educators aspects of the child's development
-discuss with parents the aims of the education program
-supervise and work with teen and adult volunteers and other zoo staff
-learn to handle some of our educational animals for classes such as turtles, snakes, birds, etc. (raining and testing provided by the Zoo)

-able to relate to children and their families
-a keen desire to teach children
-willing to learn
-good problem-solving skills
-sound literacy and numeric skills
-high level of planning and organizational skills
-enthusiasm, tact, patience and a sense of humor
-prepared to be flexible with Zoo hours and needs
-able to use time wisely and productively

Minimum Qualifications:

-College degree in related field with certification.
-Must be 18 years or older.
-Teaching experience preferred
-Some secretarial/administrative experience preferred.
-Excellent organizational skills.
- The ability to work some holidays, weekends and evenings during special events.

Hours/Days:
Part-Time: Days vary with class times and special events. Schedule to be decided upon class times. The schedules for summer camp season will vary but are generally Monday through Friday 8 am to 1 pm and school break camps are generally all day from 8 am to 5 pm.

2009 Spring/Summer/Fall Seasonal Employment

Experience a fun, friendly, and unique work environment with a part-time job at The Birmingham Zoo. Energetic, responsible and service-oriented people are needed for seasonal positions throughout the Zoo. These include positions in Gift Shops, Train, Front Gate, Birthday Parties and more.

RESPONSIBILITY
Assigned to one of a variety of revenue areas, the Cashier is responsible for providing fast, friendly service to our guests while following proper cash handling procedures. Cashiers are also responsible for daily cleaning of the strollers, restocking of gift shop merchandise and providing information to zoo visitors.

DUTIES
-
Greets all visitors with a smile and offers assistance.
- Communicates clearly and in a friendly manner.
- Insures accuracy of transaction and provides merchandise to visitor and communicates appreciation for their business.
- Responsible for following cash handling and asset protection policies and requirements.
- Responsible for all checklists associated with the cashier position.
- Utilizes computer in the preparation and use of daily cash worksheet and balancing at the end of each day.
- Fills in for other visitor services personnel as needed and directed.
- Responsible for the cleaning and organizing of assigned areas.
- Works as a team player to help others complete their objectives as needed.
- Responsible for following all Zoo sanitation standards.
- Other duties as assigned.

Zoo Services

Responsibilties
The Zoo Services host or hostess is responsible for the cleanliness of the grounds, upkeep of the restrooms, trash collection, parking lot sweeping, and set up crew for various group sales events and special events.

Duties
- Must learn and display competency on the safe and proper use of all cleaning chemicals and equipment.
- Nightly cleaning of all public restrooms, picnic area, and trash pick up.
- Daily cleaning of restrooms and zoo grounds.
- Morning prep of zoo grounds for opening.
- Possible assignment as Children’s Zoo Monitor to make sure that children are playing safely.
- Assists on set up of zoo special events; Boo at the Zoo and ZooLight Safari.
- Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
-
High School Degree or GED.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Good organizational skills.
- Flexibility and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet frequent deadlines.
- Willingness to be a team player.
